Greetings from the elementary school!  Thanks to everyone for a successful 2023-2024 school year.  It sure seemed to fly by!  I hope everyone is enjoying summer.  It has been a busy time at the elementary school as we prepare for summer school.  This year we have a record number of students enrolled in our program!  We looked forward to the many trips and alternative learning opportunities for students!  We have several new faces in the elementary building next school year: 

Natalie Dixon–Kindergarten: 

Natalie will be teaching kindergarten for us next year.  She comes to us from Boonville where she spent the past few years teaching kindergarten and first grade.  In all Natalie has 16 years of teaching experience.  

Hannah McCrary–1st Grade: 

Hannah is joining us from Columbia Public Schools where she taught first grade and kindergarten at Shepard Boulevard Elementary School for the last three years. Overall, Hannah has five years of teaching experience.  She will fill our third section of first grade. 

Megan Breece–2nd Grade: 

Formerly Megan Crowley, Mrs. Breece will be joining our team as a second grade teacher during the 2024-2025 school year.  Megan has spent the past three years teaching second grade at Southern Boone Primary.  We are excited that Megan is once again a Bulldog!

Kameryn Drollinger–3rd Grade: 

Kameryn will begin her teaching career as a third grade teacher.  Ms. Drollinger graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.  She completed her student teaching in the Southern Boone School District.  

Taylor Lazinger–3rd Grade: 

Mrs. Lazinger is joining our staff from Southern Boone Middle School where she spent the past 3 years teaching fifth grade. Next year she will be teaching third grade for us.  We are excited that Taylor decided to join our team. 

Molly Halterman–2nd and 3rd Grade Learning Specialist: 

Molly will be returning to us after a few years away from the classroom.  Molly will join our special education team as a 2nd and 3rd grade learning specialist.  Previously Molly taught 2nd grade, 3 year old preschool, and was a learning specialist. 

Sydney Miller–4th and 5th Grade Learning Specialist: 

Ms. Miller is joining us from the East Prairie School District, where she spent her first year teaching special education in 6th grade at their middle school.  She will join our special education team as a learning specialist for our 4th and 5th graders. 

Kari McKinzie–Kindergarten Instructional Aid:

Kari joins us from St. Peters, Missouri where she worked as a teacher’s aid at All Saints School.  Kari has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Finance from the University of Central Missouri. Kari and her children are excited to be Bulldogs and be a little closer to home! 

Emily Furlong–Parents as Teachers Parent Educator:

Emily will be taking over for Ms. Lydia, who will be an instructional aid in the preschool.  Emily has experience as a school social worker in the St. Clair School District, Children's Service Worker for the Department of Social Services, and volunteer work with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Columbia. We are excited to have her join our PAT program!

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Greetings from the Middle School! We hope your summer vacation has been full of fun and adventure. We can’t wait to hear everyone’s summer stories at Open House. This year's Open House will be Thursday, August 15th at 6 pm. Students will be able to pick up their class schedules, drop items off in their lockers, and visit classrooms and teachers.

Following Open House, there will be an athletic meeting at the high school gym for 7th and 8th-grade parents and students participating in middle school sports/activities for the 2024-25 school year. All 7th and 8th-grade students planning to participate in extracurricular activities for the school year should attend this meeting with a parent or guardian.

You will notice a few changes when you return to school. First, you will notice some new faces. Mrs. Geisler will be teaching 7th and 8th grade Science, Mr. Hunziker will be teaching 7th grade Physical Education, and Mrs. Hunziker will be our new Learning Specialist. Secondly, our newly renovated cafeteria has received new lunch tables. I encourage you to stop by the cafeteria for a sweet treat.

This school year there will be a change to the middle school electronic device (cell phone) policy. Please see the following for our updated policy:

Non-School Related Recreational Objects and Electronic Devices (Cell Phones) 

Because of the disruptive nature to the academic environment and the distress placed on a student’s social and emotional well-being, recreational objects such as cell phones, wireless headphones/earbuds, smartwatches, music players, computer games, laser pointers, water guns, silly string, white out, etc. we ask that students not bring these items to school. We understand that as students enter extracurricular activities communication between parent and student become important. If Students bring an electronic device (cell phone) to school they will be expected to keep cell phones and other electronic devices powered off and placed in lockers or backpacks unless the teacher or staff directs otherwise. If a cell phone is seen during the school day, it will be confiscated and turned in to the office. The student will be allowed to pick up their electronic device at the end of the school day. Exceptions to the electronic device policy will be made for necessary medical purposes, clearance must be granted by the building-level principal, please contact the middle school office at 573-817-5857. Harrisburg School District will not be responsible for lost or stolen items while on school property. Please note that additional consequences (Such as ISS/OSS) will be assigned for cell phones being out or in use in the locker rooms and restrooms.

Locks: School-issued locks will be available to check out during Open House or at the middle school office throughout the school year. School-issued locks will be combination locks, which sometimes presents a problem for persons who have never worked them. We encourage parents to work with their students on how to operate a combination lock. Lock combinations will be attached to the back of the lock upon checkout and will also be accessible on your SIS Student and Parent Portal. Upon receiving your school-issued lock it is recommended to place it somewhere safe where nobody else will see your lock combination. Please note students are not allowed to bring a lock from home as they must use a school-issued lock.

Consequences for violation of this policy are not limited to, but will include at a minimum, the following:

• 1st Offense:  Warning, parent contact, and student will leave their electronic device in the office for the remainder of the day. They will be able to pick it up at the end of the day.

• 2nd Offense:  Lunch/Advisory detention and loss of privilege for a week. Student will have to check their electronic device into the office (if they choose to bring it to school), they will be able to  pick it up at the end of the day.

• 3rd and Subsequent Offenses:  Lunch/Advisory detention for a week and loss of privilege for the remainder of the semester. Student will have to check their electronic device into the office (if they choose to bring it to school), they will be able to  pick it up at the end of the day.

HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

High School Principal

The 2024-25 school year is right around the corner! We are excited for another great year at the high school and can’t wait to see the students again! Most of our staff is returning next year, with the exception of Coach Richardson and Coach Bowman. Therefore, we only have two new teachers at the high school this year.

Our first new teacher is Jaryt Hunziker. Coach Hunziker comes to us from Osage High School, where he taught PE & Health and was the Head Girls Basketball Coach. Coach Hunziker will take on all of the same roles here at Harrisburg, as well as be our Academic Support teacher. In addition to Osage, Coach Hunziker has previously taught & coached at Clark County, Scotland County, and Boonville. We are excited to welcome Coach Hunziker, along with his wife Amy and three children, to the Bulldog community! 

Our other new teacher is Caiden Webb. This may be a familiar name for some of you, as Mr. Webb student taught for Mr. Ackman here at Harrisburg during the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Webb comes to us from the Sullivan School District and will be teaching a social studies elective and two dual credit social studies classes. Welcome back to Harrisburg Mr. Webb! 

We will also have some policy updates to our 2024-25 High School Handbook. Those updates will be shared in detail with all high school students and parents later this summer. Updates will be made to the following policies:

• Cell Phone / Electronic Devices

• Late & Missing Work

• Tardy

• Dress Code

The first day of school this year is Tuesday, August 20. We will also have an Open House at the high school on Thursday, August 15 from 6:00-7:00 PM. Students will be able to meet their teachers, get their class schedule, and find their locker. We hope to see you there!

Mission:

The purpose of the Harrisburg Bulldog Booster Club is supporting Harrisburg R-VIII School extra-curricular programs by raising funds, providing equipment, facility improvements, soliciting

memberships, promoting participation in extracurricular activities, encouraging attendance at all

school-related events, and assisting administration, teachers, and coaches. It is the belief that all extra-curricular events play an integral role in the growth of students and the Harrisburg

Bulldog Booster Club is committed to supporting and promoting all extra­-curricular programs.

Here are a few highlights from your contributions and support of the Harrisburg Bulldog Booster Club. With your help we were able to purchase just under $20,000 worth of facility and equipment improvements.  We made a facility addition with the construction of a baseball/softball bullpen. We purchased an E-Stim machine for the athletic department, golf bags for the golf team, megaphone and speaker for cheerleading, new poles for pole vault for Track & Field, overhead cubbies and bat rack for the softball dugout, and new shoulder pads and helmets for our youth football program.
