Greetings,
I hope everyone had a great summer break. I had a wonderful time with my family, participating in various activities such as ballgames, swimming, and a family vacation. The 2023-2024 school year was historic, marked by several district-wide accomplishments. The successful completion of a bond issue was one of the major highlights. The process of initiating the bond issue started in 2021 with preliminary discussions and pricing. Over the last two years, inflation posed a challenge to our project budget. Despite this, the district and the board of education were careful with taxpayer money, completing the project and making the most of the funds available. I am happy with the project outcome, although I wish we could have done more.
Some of the major accomplishments include the major renovation of underground utilities, the demolition of a deteriorating structure that housed these utilities, and the removal of the old boiler room, which allowed us to construct a fully ADA-compliant restroom facility for the middle school. Additionally, the cafeteria and kitchen at the elementary/middle school underwent significant renovations, improving the facilities. Other key facility improvements included the replacement of all HVAC units at the North campus using federal and local funds, setting us up nicely for the coming years. We also secured a 100K safety grant, which was used to upgrade various areas around the district, enhancing safety for students and staff. The addition of four new buses was aided by a significant grant to help with this purchase.
The Harrisburg R-VIII school board continues to help move the district forward and has been great to work with. They share a vision of continuous improvement while retaining traditional values of hard work, dedication, and Bulldog Pride. It is no secret that education has experienced a shortage of educators and has been in transition. The BOE and the administration team continue to make decisions based on “what is best for Harrisburg kids.” Strong educators are an integral part of this equation. Attracting and retaining the best and brightest educators and filling each position with a quality educator is always the goal. The Harrisburg School District can do this by being one of the top-paying school districts in the area. Our new additions this year include veteran educators from surrounding districts as well as top new prospects. I am excited about our upcoming staff. Our support staff, who work tirelessly behind the scenes, are second to none and continue to bring value, professionalism, and expertise to our community. I deeply appreciate their hard work and dedication.
We have major goals for this year and will continue to move the district forward. As many of you know, Harrisburg has always been home to me, and I am thankful for the opportunity to lead this great district and be a part of this community for another year. Welcome back, and let's have another historic school year. #BulldawgPride.
Sincerely,
Steve Combs
